But can you test AJAX ?

With AJAX, the browser and server exchange small amounts of data asynchronously in the background (XMLHttpRequest object), which obviates the reloading of the whole page after each of the user's actions.

However this asynchronous mode, which has been supported by browsers since 2005, is not a mode that was foreseen when HTML and HTTP were initially introduced. It is therefore essential that your load testing software be designed to support this type of communication if your performance tests are to be carried out correctly.

Furthermore, as the content of the requests exchanged is in great part determined by the business logic, your load testing software needs to provide you with powerful functions to make working with data flows easy (whatever their type: XML, HTML, JSON, JavaScript…), including an automatic configuration feature, to allow you to carry out varied and realistic performance tests easily.

Without these both complete and coherent supports, you will not be able to carry out exhaustive testing, which could result in the deployment of an application whose behavior has not been validated under load.
